PROGRAM
The Harlem Chamber Players will join the Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble to perform selections from the poetry of Emma Lazarus and the music of Dietrich Buxtehude are dual inspirations for Caroline Shaw’s deeply moving cantata, To the Hands, which explores the plight of refugees from around the world and contemplates our “role and responsibility in these global and local crises.” Shaw’s work is paired with Buxtehude’s Ad Manus, from his Membra Jesu Nostri (on which Shaw based her composition), as well as with other pieces related to this theme, including Saunder Choi’s The New Colossus and the final anthem from 1001 Voices: A Symphony for a New America by Frank London and Judith Sloan.
